Lighthouse Homecare hopes you all enjoyed the holidays!
Although the season is a joyous time for most, it has proven to be quite dangerous for our seniors. Between the cold weather, gloomy days, and flu bugs going around, it’s difficult for a lot of our elders to shake the winter blues. Many become ill or depressed, and it is our job to aim as much positivity as we can towards them.
As a friend, family member, or caregiver we can encourage a number of activities:
INDOOR
- card/board games
- arts and crafts
- crocheting/sewing
- online book clubs
- exercise– getting on a treadmill or exercise bike, walking up and down stairs (burns calories/can help prevent heart disease)
OUTDOOR
- bowling (many places have senior leagues)
- bingo at a local hall or senior club
- book clubs
- cooking/sewing/art classes (helps improve memory, boosts self confidence)
- trying out a new restaurant
- exploring a nearby museum
> If you are a friend or family member that lives nearby, try to offer transportation as much as possible. This not only helps your loved ones be able to participate and socialize in outside activities, but provides time for them to spend with you even if it may be only a few minutes! This is an easy and subtle way to let them know you care and aren’t excluding them from your life, as busy as it may be.
